Periodic Labs
Process Engineer, Powder
About this role
Periodic Labs seeks a Process Engineer to manage the end-to-end powder synthesis workflow in their AI-driven materials discovery lab. You'll own everything from dispensing through characterization, building systems and controls that maintain data quality while scaling throughput across diverse chemistries.
What you'll do
- Manage full powder synthesis workflow including dispensing, mixing, pressing, reaction, recovery, and characterization
- Identify and mitigate failure modes through systems design, controls, and root-cause investigations
- Apply statistical process control and design of experiments to stabilize processes and optimize key variables
- Troubleshoot lab equipment across the workflow and resolve data integrity issues with software integration
- Design operator workflows to minimize sample mix-ups and human-introduced variation
- Partner with research, engineering, and software teams to translate manual lab insights into automated lab requirements
What they're looking for
- Solid-state chemistry or powder processing experience
- Statistical process control (SPC) and design of experiments (DOE)
- Systems thinking and process mapping
- Characterization techniques (XRD, SEM, high-temperature processing)
- Equipment troubleshooting and hands-on lab diagnostics
- Data validation and basic scripting/software collaboration
- Cross-functional communication
- Six Sigma or Lean methodologies

- Walk us through a time you owned an end-to-end powder or ceramic process — what were the biggest failure modes you encountered, and how did you systematically eliminate them?
- Describe your experience with statistical process control and design of experiments. What tools have you used (JMP, Minitab, etc.), and how have you applied them to stabilize a high-mix, fast-changing process?
