About this role

Etched seeks a Data Center Engineer to design and manage physical infrastructure for high-density AI inference hardware deployments. You'll oversee the complete lifecycle of data center and lab environments—from facility selection through operations—applying rigorous engineering principles to power distribution, thermal management, networking, and capacity planning.

What you'll do

  • Design and deploy rack layouts, power distribution systems, and network infrastructure for 90+ kW/rack AI compute environments
  • Architect high-speed networking (100G/200G/400G Ethernet) and manage cabling across data center and lab facilities
  • Partner with co-location vendors and facilities teams to evaluate sites, negotiate contracts, and enforce SLAs
  • Develop asset management systems, monitoring tools, and change control processes for full infrastructure visibility
  • Lead capacity planning cycles aligned with hardware roadmap, forecasting power and space needs 6–18 months ahead
  • Establish physical security procedures, access controls, and manage preventive maintenance and hardware lifecycle processes

What they're looking for

  • Data center engineering and operations (5+ years hands-on experience)
  • High-density compute deployment and thermal/power management
  • Structured cabling, fiber/copper plant, and high-speed networking hardware
  • Electrical one-line diagrams and facility documentation interpretation
  • DCIM and infrastructure monitoring tooling
  • Vendor management and RFP evaluation
  • Rapid decision-making in fast-moving environments
  • Asset management and change control processes

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a high-density compute deployment you've designed end-to-end. What were the power and thermal constraints you faced, and how did you solve them?
  • Describe your experience with power architecture and PDU design for data centers. How would you approach designing power distribution for 90 kW per rack deployments?
