About this role

Basis seeks a Research Engineer to build internal tools and automation systems that enhance researcher productivity and operational efficiency at a nonprofit AI research organization. You'll develop LLM-powered automation, analytics infrastructure, and researcher-focused productivity tools that enable the organization to scale without manual overhead.

What you'll do

  • Build researcher productivity tools including experiment tracking, literature automation, and computational environment management
  • Develop GTM and business operations automation for CRM systems, proposal generation, and customer workflows
  • Create analytics and measurement infrastructure for research progress and strategic decision-making
  • Automate operational processes including recruiting, marketing, and cross-functional coordination
  • Identify and implement high-leverage automation opportunities across research and operational workflows
  • Iterate on internal tools based on user feedback to maximize adoption and impact

  • Programming expertise in Julia, Python, C++, or ML-family languages
  • LLM-powered automation using OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, LangChain, or similar frameworks
  • ML engineering with experience implementing published techniques and distributed model training
  • Software engineering to drive projects from conception to completion
  • Research workflow understanding from academic or research environments
  • User-centric design and iterative tool development
  • Full-stack programming from high-level APIs to low-level systems code
  • Ability to learn research literature from PL and ML venues independently
