Base Power

Software Engineer, Backend

Austin, TXfulltimemidAdded 1 month ago

About this role

Base is hiring a senior backend engineer to build BaseOS, the operating system powering a distributed battery network that modernizes the electrical grid. You'll own critical systems spanning real-time energy control, deployment logistics, and operational tools while making architectural decisions that impact how power flows across the grid.

What you'll do

  • Design and operate core backend services for BaseOS, ensuring reliability, performance, and scalability
  • Define system architecture, data models, and engineering standards across the platform
  • Develop workflow orchestration systems using tools like Temporal for device control and operational processes
  • Build and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS using Terraform as core product components
  • Collaborate with hardware, deployment, and operations teams to translate real-world constraints into system design
  • Make rapid decisions with imperfect information and drive technical execution with accountability

What they're looking for

  • Backend development in Go, Python, Java, or similar languages
  • Distributed systems design with understanding of reliability and failure modes
  • AWS or GCP cloud infrastructure and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Infrastructure as code with Terraform
  • API design and full-stack system ownership
  • Workflow orchestration frameworks (Temporal preferred)
  • Cross-functional collaboration and product intuition
  • IoT or real-time control systems (bonus)

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a production system you've owned end-to-end. What were the biggest reliability or scalability challenges you faced, and how did you solve them?
  • Describe your experience with distributed systems. How do you think about failure modes, and can you give an example of a production issue you debugged?
