About this role

1X is seeking a Battery Test Engineer to design and execute comprehensive testing programs for lithium-ion battery systems powering their humanoid robot NEO. You'll generate critical performance and reliability data that drives battery algorithms, validation, and real-world operational improvements for a robot designed to safely operate in home environments.

What you'll do

  • Design and execute battery testing campaigns across cells, modules, packs, and complete robotic systems under realistic operating conditions
  • Create robotic duty-cycle test profiles that simulate real-world transient loads, regenerative events, and continuous operation
  • Identify battery degradation mechanisms, failure modes, and performance limitations through structured testing and analysis
  • Support validation of battery management systems including state-of-charge, state-of-health, fault detection, and protection strategies
  • Analyze large datasets to extract actionable insights and deliver recommendations for battery design and algorithm improvements
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware, firmware, controls, and fleet operations teams

What they're looking for

  • Lithium-ion battery behavior and degradation mechanisms
  • Battery testing equipment operation (cyclers, environmental chambers)
  • Data analysis using Python, MATLAB, or similar technical computing tools
  • Root-cause analysis and troubleshooting
  • Laboratory experimental validation methods
  • Battery management systems and SoC/SoH estimation
  • Technical documentation and cross-functional communication
  • Automated test systems and test workflow scripting

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a battery testing campaign you've designed—what were the key parameters you measured, and how did you translate real-world duty cycles into test profiles?
  • Describe your hands-on experience with battery cyclers and environmental chambers. What equipment have you used, and what was the most challenging test setup you've implemented?
